Beth Mead is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament during Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, the club have confirmed.
The forward was forced off with injury in second half stoppage time as the Gunners were beaten 3-2 by United at the Emirates Stadium.
Mead will see a surgeon in the coming days, following which a further time frame for the injury can be given.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant 2022, winning the golden boot and player of the tournament award as England surged to a famous Euro 2022 triumph, and finishing second to Alexia Putellas in the Ballon d’Or Feminin.
The severity of Mead’s injury could see her miss next summer’s World Cup, which begins on 20 July 2023.
Mead is the latest Arsenal player to be sidelined through injury, with captain Kim Little and first choice centre back pairing Leah Williamson and Rafaelle also currently out.
“We can confirm that Beth Mead suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our match against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday,” an Arsenal statement read.
“Unfortunately, this means that Beth is set for an extended period on the sidelines. She will see a surgeon in the coming days, after which further details on timescales will be established.”
“Everyone at the club will now be supporting Beth and working hard to get her back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
