Deschamps set to stay on with France until 2024, leaving Zidane waiting – MARCA

French Football Federation (FFF) president Noel Le Graet previously claimed that the decision on Didier Deschamps‘ future would be the coach’s to make should France reach the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.

After beating England 2-1 in the quarter-finals, Les Blues are now set to face Morocco in their bid to reach the final, while this also means that the FFF will allow Deschamps to decide whether he will be in charge of the team after the tournament.

Zinedine Zidane is the favorite to succeed Deschamps if he leaves, but it looks like he’ll stay.

Deschamps’ quotes after defeating England

“Each thing in its own time,” Deschamps said when asked about this in the press conference after the victory against England.

“It’s great to achieve the objectives set by the president. He is happy and many people I imagine are happy in France, but I like to enjoy what we have achieved again, that is to say, to be again among the four best teams in the world.

“Now I’m thinking about Wednesday’s game [against Morocco], nothing else.”

Waiting for a statement from Deschamps

Whether Zidane takes over or not depends on Deschamps‘ decision, as there seems to be no other candidate who could bring everyone together if the latter decides to bring a long and successful period to an end.

But there are those who believe that he would have the will and desire to carry on, no matter what happens in Doha. Therefore, he might still be in charge for the European Championship in two years.

That’s what Le Parisien have reported this Sunday, claiming that the coach will continue until 2024.

The European Championship is a trophy that Deschamps hasn’t won as France were beaten by Portugal in the final back in 2016 at the Stade de France.

But, according to L’Equipe, there is another factor that could influence his future. And it is none other than the investigation opened into the FFF at the request of the Minister of Sports Amelie Oudea-Castera due to Le Graet‘s behaviour and an alleged toxic culture in the federation.

The investigations will be concluded in February and, in the event they compromise the FFF president, Deschamps‘ decision could change.
