Tigres UANL have appointed Diego Cocca as the new head coach, ahead of the 2023 Liga MX Clausura.
He replaces Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera, who departed the club on November nine following a disappointing 2022 Apertura campaign that saw Tigres fall to Pachuca in the Liguilla quarterfinals.
Following the defeat, Herrera blamed an ‘aged roster’, causing an internal stir.
The former Atlas coach will now take over.
“Yes, of course, it’s a privilege for me. See you at the volcano, Incomparables,” Diego Cocca said during his presentation as head coach.
“The new coach will receive the squad upon his return from vacation on November 28, and will lead the team’s preseason from November 30 to December 10 in the Riviera Maya,” read the official club statement about his announcement.
He joins Tigres after leading Atlas to back-to-back Liga MX trophies, breaking the team’s 70-year title drought when defeating Club Leon on December 12 2021. Cocca left Atlas amid the 2022 Apertura, following a string of bad results.
The 2023 Liga MX Clausura is set to kick off on January 6, giving Cocca plenty of time to adjust and make the necessary changes to the squad.
