In the world of auteur filmmaking, there is very little conversation about sequels. Rarely do we see sequels for critical darlings that don’t make huge amounts of money at the box office. And yet, for the past five years, give or take, everyone has been asking Luca Guadagnino about a sequel to his award-winning romance, “Call Me By Your Name.” And today, same as it has been over the years, he has the desire to make the film but doesn’t have any firm plans. You know, like a story or something. But when he does, you better believe he’ll call up Armie Hammer, even though the actor is now persona non grata.

In a new interview with Variety, Luca Guadagnino did his semi-annual update on the status of “Call Me By Your Name 2.” Not much has changed. The director wants to do it. He has some inklings about ideas he’d like to pursue for a sequel. However, he has no official story or script, therefore the film is just hypothetical at this point. That said, when the time comes, he won’t have any problem calling up Armie Hammer.
“There is no hypothesis, so there is no movie,” explained the filmmaker about “Call Me By Your Name 2.” “It’s a wish and a desire, and I have not made up my mind about what would be the story.”
When asked if he would still call up Armie Hammer to co-star in the sequel, despite the actor being accused of sexual misconduct (…and cannibalism) in 2021, Guadagninio replied, “Yeah. Of course.”

In the 2017 original film, Hammer played the love interest of Timothée Chalamet in the film set in Italy. Interestingly, the filmmaker also teased the idea of a sequel that serves more as a spinoff, focusing on the life of housekeeper, Mafalda (Vanda Capriolo).
“Which is divine,” he said. “I would be very interested in seeing what is the life of Mafalda when she’s not around the family.”
Again, it can’t be overstated that there are no official plans for a sequel to “Call Me By Your Name.” Despite nothing being set in stone, it’s clear the desire for a sequel still exists, and it still has the potential to come together in the future, even with Armie Hammer reprising his role.
